Notes on Liposuction

Liposuction, or Lipoplasty, is a surgical procedure that slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and enhancing your self-image.  One of the positive things about lipsuction is that it is one of the few surgical procedures where the results are essentially permanent, if your weight stays essentially unchanged.  The ideal candidate is one who is at or close to their ideal body weight, who has areas of excess fat that they cannot get rid of.  Other candidates are those who are at least stable in their weight, healthy, and have areas of excess fat.  Once these fat deposits are removed, you do not grow more fat cells.  Therefore, the result you get from liposuction is essentially permanent.

Despite good health and reasonable levels of fitness, some people may still have disproportionate contours due to localized fat deposits.  These may be due to family traits, rather than a lack of exercise.

Liposuction can be used to treat these stubborn fat pockets in many areas, including the thighs, arms, hips, abdomen, back, inner knees, chest and necks.  Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity and will not replace exercise and good eating habits.  If someone maintains their typical pattern of eating and exercise after surgery as before, their weight will change minimally.  Liposuction is NOT a weight reduction procedure.

Liposuction was once considered to be a very safe and easy procedure to do.  Therefore, many doctors, who were not plastic surgeons, began performing liposuction.  However, over the years, many different forms of liposuction have been developed.  Results have improved, the amount of fat that can be removed has increased, but the risks have increased as well.  Therefore, it is vitally important that you choose a plastic surgeon, board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc., to perform your surgery.
